Felix demonstrates how to upload from tape.

Change Media trainer Felix explains to our Ngarrindjeri team how to upload their footage, and they in turn demonstrate their abilities.

Remember when capturing to secure your capture device to mains power, to avoid unnecessarily losing important footage.
Locking and filing tapes when finished with them can provide a very good backup should you lose any media due to unforeseen circumstances.

Below you find a step by step overview of the capturing process from tape to computer using Final Cut Pro.

Getting your media from tape to edit is really easy once you’ve done a few times.

Attach your camera to mains-power, so that your batteries don’t run out and disrupt the upload process.

Connect your Firewire cable to your computer’s firewire port.

Connect a Firewire-enabled camera with Firewire cable – the port is often hidden, check your camera manual.

Switch your camera to ‘Play’ or VCR mode.

In ‘Play’ mode, rewind your tape to the start of your footage.

Open Final Cut Pro from your dock or application folder.

In Final Cut, set your capture scratch hard drive, to decide where your footage will be stored.

Sometimes you have to reconnect media, that went offline. Press ‘Search’ for the software to find your footage or ‘Locate’ to find it manually.

Open Audio/Video Settings under Final Cut Pro.

Create a new logging bin. Name your bin and save your project.

Open Log & Capture dialogue box.

In the Log & Capture window, label your clips.

Press ‘Play’ on the Log & Capture window control. Your camera should respond now.

Press ‘Capture Now’ to upload all of your footage.

Change Media Training Toolkit: 6. Upload and Import – Photos

How to connect your stills camera to computer and upload/ import your digital photos.

OVERVIEW:

When uploading stills there are a couple of different things to keep in mind. The actual importing of digital stills into a timeline is quite a simple and easy process, and Final Cut usually has little to no troubles with the playback of these files.

Choosing the correct file format however can become tricky. Counter-intuitively, you should start with the end. Whatever your output is will dictate how you use your picture files. If you are using a HDV timeline you will use a different file format than DV. Our tutorials will hopefully shed some light on how you will use your media.

Change Media Training Toolkit: 6. Upload and Import – Music

How to connect your stills camera to computer and upload/ import your digital photos.

OVERVIEW:

Uploading music into your film can often bring up a couple of different issues. The first and foremost is copyright, if you have a particular tune that you would like in your film, if it is going to be used for anything other than home use, it will need to be copyright free, or your own creative work. Being aware of this during the planning stage of your film can help you to avoid awkward altercations later in the production.
Issues such as file formats can also be problematic. Our tutorials will run through the correct file formats for broadcast and internet use, and proper workflow to get your files from CD or storage device into your timeline. They will also run through file conversion, and a couple of programs you can use to do these conversions.
