Change Media worked with acclaimed director, actor, filmmaker and social animateur,  Shahin Shafaei, and 18 young migrants, to create new work as part of a long term project. The forum theater workshop ran over 4 days, and mixed theater and acting techniques with digital media skills, to prepare for a 3-year multi-arts project , The Perfect Refugee.

Our Change Media team and a group of young migrants in Adelaide spent four days learning Theatre Games and developing their skills in acting, filming and improvisation.

The work with Shahin led us to another great idea generator project with actors from the Bell Shakespeare ensemble and artists from refugee background during a 5-day intensive laboratory in Cowra, NSW. Find some of the results and documentation below:

Example research

Using Boal's forum theatre techniques, based on his seminal work 'theatre of the the oppressed', we were able build the creative foundations for an exciting and innovative collaboration with young refugee and Bell Shakespeare. We started to use similar techniques to generate ideas and do practical, action-based research for our other projects, such as the Leeton Bidgee Binge initiative.

This is just one way to conduct your research. For example, with the young people in Leeton Shire, NSW, we conducted a 1-day session on the danger of binbge drinking, based on extensive web research, watching the best and the worst examples of anti-drinking ads produced globally. Once we were able to agree on the production approach, we then ran several acting workshops and staged sceanrios, before we could develop the key party scene we used for the 45 second advert that screened to over 70.000 viewers across the Riverina district.

Have a look at our Research and Development section for the examples we used for Don't be That Guy.

Theatre games

Find below a series of videos introducing theatre games we produced as part of our The Perfect Refugee project with theatre director Shahin Shafaei.

‘Pre-Production’ is where you start to devise some more of the specifics about your project. No longer in the world of amorphous maybes, or will we/won’t we type discussions, pre-production is your chance to start planning and getting your ideas down on paper.

In this section we look at research and development, different styles of shoots, how to write and create your story and how to organise a production day and manage risks.
