Hard to Swallow
Tree Change
OUTCOMES: We tailored the workshop to suit a range of skill levels and experience, our aim to share as much digital media knowledge as possible in a 1-day session: with one group we focused on comedy and satire, another expressed an emotional journey with objects and the third team wanted to tell a real documentary story – the Herculean challenge was to convert each concept into film, script, understand film narratives and angles, act, and learn how to shoot an edit-in-camera video we will all watch at the end of the day!
All participants achieved basic camera, audio and screen language skills.
We also explored innovative ways to incorporate digital media into the school curriculum.
SCREENINGS & AWARDS:: The group watched their films with appreciation at the end of a fantastic day workshop. Riverland Youth Theatre screened them at their annual general meeting Dec 2009.
IMPACT & FEEDBACK:
Working with regional youth, arts and theatre practitioners was an exciting challenge for our team. The diverse team of young and not-so-young artists came up with a range of fantastic ideas for their edit-in-camera films: how does it feel to make a tree change, the politics of politics and bullying from the perspective of gym balls…
It was amazing to watch their films at the end of the day, shot in only a few hours.
RYT – Hero Project Feedback
1 Day Digital Film Workshop – Sunday November 22
What did you get out of the workshop?
• Ideas, confidence
• A lot. The experience of going out into the field to attempt to film a short story was very rewarding for me. It shows how hard it is to make a short film.
• Met new and interesting people in my local community. Really enjoyed the constraints imposed by in-camera edit. Enjoyed the feeling of having a ‘product’
• Lots of hints and tips to improve my teaching of media studies
• Important info on video production, filming and equipment
• How to in camera edit. Advice on technical equipment, how to storyboard & simplify a story.
• I’m helping a friend do a documentary. Now I have a starting point.
• I got to work with film more than I have ever before
• I really learned from this experience. A lot about the right angles for camera and things like little details, which make a big difference.
• I didn’t know anything about film making before the workshop and now I’d feel confident at least knowing where to start. I loved the practical, ‘chuck you in at the deep end’ style of workshop. Best way to learn.
Do you feel the artist(s) prepared and conducted the workshop on time and in an appropriate way?
• Started on time, finished on time, kept pretty much to schedule. The tutors were excellent at keeping us on task.
• Yes. They did prepare things before.
• Yes they were great, it was an info download
• very well done
• very professional
• excellent time management by the artists – including the flexible approach
• absolutely spot on
• absolutely. I think the two people were very well organised and prepared for today’s workshop.
What was your experience engaging with the guest artists(s)
• I thought it was good to mix with two people in the industry. It’s a great start. My future film(s) may not be number one sellers, but they would most definitely give people a take home message.
• very easy to talk to
• very professional and approachable. Artists showed a good ability to respond to individual skill levels. Impressed.
• very positive, friendly and professional
• very approachable and informative
• that it is possible however requires lots of hard work to enter into a career in film making / documentary etc
• they shared and helped a lot
• great. They were really fun to work with, and great learning how to do certain things with cameras etc
• fantastic, they were knowledgeable and friendly. very experienced but also incredible encouraging
How could the workshop have worked better
• Maybe a little more time for filming but otherwise very happy
• There wasn’t really anything that needed improving, it was just the timing. If we could fit in more time that would be great.
• Maybe one more hour would have been better
• Time effiency
• Possible more time, more equipment etc, held over a few days
• More of it. Do part 2 next year
• My own experience of the workshop was extremely positive. The few things that ‘didn’t work’ actually worked as a learning experience.
• More people would have been better.
Any other comments
• The venue was great. Very quiet and peaceful
• I really enjoyed the one day format and the constraints this imposed. Felt this enabled the groups to really focus on the ‘heart’ of their stories.
• do this again
• Yay Film!
• Really fun
• Thankyou, I’ve had a great day
