Product Description

Change Media worked with Ngarrindjeri Elder Major 'Moogy' Sumner to document the making of the first traditional Ngarrindjeri / Boandik bark canoe on Boandik country in over 100 years. The team followed Major Sumner as he cut a surfboard-size piece of bark from a giant redgum tree and prepared a traditional canoe. But the biggest question was - besides getting the bark down in one piece - will it float and will it carry him, to collect swan eggs and spear fish, as his people have done for thousands and thousands of years?
The half hour documentary forms part of an evocative educational River Red Gum DVD, which combines Caring for Country best practice with transmission of traditional culture. The DVD contains:

• Moogy's Yuki - a 27min documentary about the creation of a traditional Ngarrindjeri / Boandik bark canoe

• Redgum Restoration - a 6min Caring For Country mini-documentary with additional expert interviews

• Recording Culture - a 6min youth produced film

• Photo slide-show
